Visit Sayaxche and the ruins of Seibal. Complex A shows evidence of a peaceful Toltec invasion in the Maya Region. The stelae show both cultures living in harmony. The Seibal stelae are among the finest and best preserved sculptures of the late classical period. Seibal is often called the "Maya Art Gallery" Continue south by motorboat on the Petexbatum river to the Petexbatum Lagoon and overnight in the Mahogany Lodge. Next morning after a one-hour ride across the Lagoon to the ruins of Aguateca - an adventure to remember. Visit the underground passage and the main plaza. Next day optional visit by boat to the Altar de Sacrificios near the junction with the Usamacinta River.

From Guatemala City:
Departure to Quirigua, a fabulous Maya observatory where you can admire the fine stelae of great beauty surrounding the small plaza, temples and large zoomorphal stones bearing commemorative dates, all immersed in the lush tropical vegetation. (746-810 A.D.). The largest stela is 35 feet high, 5 feet wide and 5.5 feet thick, weighing 65 tons! Quirigua was an outpost to Copan, 40 miles to the south. Continue your trip to Puerto Barrios, Izabal to take the boat to the Caribbean town of Livingston. Most of the population are descendants of african inhabitants from other Caribbean areas. They impregnate the ambiance with their Caribbean music rhythm. Continue to Copan in Honduras or return to Guatemala for your next Maya destination.
