Copan: Masters of Masters

Mexico - Belize - Guatemala - Honduras - El Salvador Day 1
The fastest growing city between Mexico and Colombia is San Pedro Sula. Upon arrival met at the new (1997) international airport and transferred to your hotel. Time to visit artisan shops and the Museum of Anthropology.

Day 2
Your two-day trip to one of the most beautiful sites in the Maya World: COPAN! The 2½ hour drive (108 miles) will take you through interesting towns, villages and hilly surroundings. Check in at your hotel. After lunch visit the site museum in COPAN, a magnificent display of artifacts and replicas of the recently discovered buildings, including a copy of the Rosalila Temple. You may want to rent a horse from the town of COPAN Ruinas to the archaeological site itself! Visiting the Museum first will give you a better understanding of the importance and splendor of COPAN.

Day 3
Today, devote your time to visit the area inhabited from the Early Preclassic through the Late Classic. Among COPAN'S famous buildings are Structure 22 with its hieroglyphic stairway and the multilayered Structure 16, in which the tomb's earliest rulers have been found. Some of the most complex carvings of faces, figures and animals are found on the 21 stelae, each about 3 meters high. The original stelae are in the Museum to prevent weather damage. Copies are on site. Admire the ball court and the ongoing excavations. You can observe how Copan river has eroded the eastern part of the acropolis. You may walk to the area of Las Sepulturas, a residential area.

After lunch you may continue by road to Guatemala City or return to San Pedro Sula.

Day 4
Continue to your next destination. Currently a 30-minute flight to the city of Belize will allow you to continue your visit in the Maya World. Or enjoy the best scuba diving in the Bay Islands. Several flights available from San Pedro Sula.
